Happy Friday the 13th, bunnies!
It's a day for looking over your shoulder. A day for watching your step before you go anywhere. A day where you make sure you're wearing a pair of shoes with a good grip on them (take it from me, I'm wearing my Timberland boots today). In honor of the day that apparently swims in a pool of bad luck, I thought it would be a civic duty if I could offer some styling tips for those who wanted a little extra confidence before they left their house. You know, I'd like them to look good before they slipped on a banana peel and broke their face.
I fell asleep watching
"The Stepford Wives" last night...the properly disturbing 1975 version, not the terrible, comedic Nicole Kidman remake. While I find Katharine Ross lovely, I was more interested in her comic-relief best friend, Bobbie Marcowitz, played by
Paula Prentiss, and her sense of style.
Short shorts, high waist, pastels, suspenders, low-cut tops, bright colors, NO bras...everything about her wardrobe was so delightfully 1970's with all it's feminine rebellion and ironic sexiness that it seemed like such a shame in the end when...
(If you've never seen the movie you may want to look away for this spoiler)...Bobbie get's turned into a Stepford robot and starts dressing like a Victorian-era housewife. But still, even as a robot Bobbie's particular "Stepford" look still had a bit of flirtiness to it, (ex. a low-cut, lacy top) but with much more maturity and elegance. Both styles had special elements to them and this got me thinking,
"Is there a way I could wear an outfit that combined the fun and sexy Bobbie with the elegant and mature Stepford Bobbie?"
It's best to start with a base...my choice is a
high-waited, frayed denim short. I love denim since it goes with almost anything and can be used casually or elegantly depending on the accessories; perfect for my Bobbie/Stepford mix. A
white sleeveless blouse with the shorts keeps the casual feel of the outfit but finishing it off with
a bright blazer will add the level of sophistication needed for a Stepford wife.
Accessories are key for the direction of this look! A
brown leather waist belt adds class, while
blue boat shoes keep it chill. Beautiful
pearl earrings would be appropriate for any formal occasion and
a white fedora will help you feel laid back about being there. If you really wanted to wear this outfit without feeling under dressed, you can finish it off with
a pair of gray tights to wear underneath the shorts.
The point is to find a balance between playful and elegant; casual and sophisticated. You want to pull the outfit together so you can walk into a fancy Sunday brunch or a casual backyard BBQ party without feeling over or under dressed. It's always good to be prepared.
Have fun, Stepford Bunnies!
